Home style APPLE SAUCE

Ahoy-hoy!

What’s cooking in my kitchen today? Devour-able Apple Sauce

What do you do when you have a bounty of apples in your fruit basket that are beginning to soften?

Apples are the most readily available fruit in the market. This honest-to-goodness fruit will keep for weeks if stored properly.

India is popular for cultivating some of the best version of apples. There are approximately 20 varieties in the market. Besides the nutritional fact, what a bliss it is to bite into a ripe juicy apple, the tempting smell and crunchy texture of whose instantly fills up the senses.

Lately, I am exhausted with the accumulation of apples in my house. With summer escorting delightful mangoes and melons, it is annoying to see the apples piling up amidst them. So I mulled over an ideal way to leverage them, something easiest to make on earth that didn’t require cooking skills – Apple Sauce

FEW WAYS TO SPOON DOWN MORE FRUIT

  • Deliciously spoon over your ice-cream scoop
  • Heap on your toast with almonds
  • Pile applesauce between yogurt and granola
  • Swirl on the oatmeal
  • Serve as a sweetener for porridge
  • Snack on it’s own

How long will my Applesauce keep?

Although applesauce can be eaten at room temperature or chilled, it’s best to keep it in the fridge in an airtight container and consume within 5-7 days.

Is it sounding too detailed? Okay, enough here! Let’s begin with what you are here for.

What you Need?

So, Applesauce is very versatile as you can prepare different recipes with it. The texture and flavour can be customised to your own taste. It is gut friendly and needs only 5 affordable ingredients from your kitchen.

  • 2-3 medium sized apples chopped into chunks
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 3-4 tbsp sweetener (optional)
  • 1-2 Cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice

Procedure

  1. In a heavy bottomed saucepan, place all the ingredients except sweetener.
  2. Add water just enough to soak the apples.
  3. Cover the saucepan and bring the water to boil over high heat then cook the mixture over low-medium heat.
  4. Stir occasionally until the apples are tender. When the apples are starting to fall apart, add sweetener spoon by spoon. Adjust to taste as necessary.
  5. For chunky applesauce, use a potato masher or simply a fork to mash a little bit. For smooth consistency, remove the cinnamon sticks and blend the mixture in your mixer grinder.
Aaah! The aroma

Some TIPS

  • This recipe is perfect for using apples that have almost gone bad.
  • Any variety of apples can be used. I used Washington Red Apples owing to their extra juice.
  • Cinnamon is used to spice up the sauce
  • I used brown sugar but feel free to use any type of sweetener
  • Lemon juice slows down oxidation which aids in keeping the sauce longer in good condition
  • I used heavy-bottomed saucepan to have my apples and cinnamon simmer on the stove. I swear the escaping aroma leaves the house smelling amazing and with some lounge music playing in your background is better than therapy.
Ill leave you with a fun nutritional fact :
Cinnamon is known to have many medicinal properties - lowers blood sugar, boosts brain functions, calms inflammation plus helps in weight loss.
